Growing Dollarization in Cuba Raises Concerns About the MLC's Future
Since late 2024, Cubans have grown anxious about the future of the MLC as dollar-only stores expand and the currency rapidly loses value. Despite official reassurances, both the MLC and the Cuban peso are devaluing, making access to dollarized goods harder—especially for those earning in pesos. The Cuban Observatory of Currencies and Finance warns that dollarization increases inequality and advises saving in foreign currencies. Forecasts show continued MLC decline and rising demand for dollars and euros.
